Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

  1. What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-like covering that fits over a damaged tooth to protect it from further damage. It is designed to match the exact shape and size of your damaged tooth and fit seamlessly into your smile. A crown can be made of ceramic, porcelain, metal, or resin. Depending on the material it is made from, it can be color-matched to the rest of your smile.
  2. How is a dental crown made?
At your initial visit, your dentist will take a mold of your mouth in order to design a dental crown that will match the rest of your teeth.
  3. How many visits are needed?
Your smile can be restored in two visits. The first visit will be to prepare your tooth for the crown and to take a mold to create the crown. You’ll leave with a temporary crown while your permanent replacement is being made. Once your new crown is ready, you will come back in to place your new permanent crown!
  4. How should a crown be cared for?
The great news is that caring for a dental crown is easy! You’ll just care for your crown the same way you do your natural teeth! Be sure to brush and floss daily as well as visit your dentist for regular check-ups. With proper care, your crown can last for years without repair.
